SOS Save Our Seeds!
To many of us , seed-saving sounds like a tricky task, best left to the professionals. But the survival of our food supply depends on saving seeds, and it is a lost skill that can be very easily revived.
With vege gardening enjoying such a boom , there is an increasing number of people learning to prepare the soil, plant, and then enjoy their harvests. Now gardeners can complete the cycle and harvest their own seed for next season!
To show you how simple and rewarding saving your own seed can be, the Environment Centre is running several workshops over the next few weeks. The workshops will give you an insight into why seed saving is so important to humans, the differences between hybrid and open pollinated seed, and learn the importance of botanical names . You will discover how to grow plants for seed, and how to collect, store and label your seeds.
The workshops all take place in home garden settings where you will be able to see a variety of plants at various stages of setting seed.
The workshops are led by Jo Duff, Janet Luke and Louise Phillips, who are all great gardeners and experienced permaculture teachers. Sign up for the two hour workshops in Havelock North, Poukawa (south of Hastings) or Waipawa.
