I am new to sowing from seeds and am finding the seed raising mix to be very difficult to get evenly moist. It doesn't seem to be very absorbant and if I look a few mls down it is still bone dry...

What potting mix are you using? I use a mix of leaf mould rotted down with comfrey leaves, some sieved compost and soil. I normally water the mix once it is in the pots and then sew the seeds once it has drained a little. Depending on the seeds I then sometimes put the pot in a plastic bag fixed with a ruber band to keep the hunity high.

Thanks, I was just using the Yates Seed raising mix. I have actually found that after a couple of waterings it starts to absorb the water and is easier to water gently. First time sowing seeds and they are starting to do really well..

If you put about half a teaspoon of dishliquid per litre of water (approx) and use a water your mix before you pop your seeds in this could work. The little bit of detergent acts as a "wetting" agent, and will not harm your seeds.
At the same time, add the same ratio of milk and this could help prevent "damping" off fungus.
