broad beans for food or decoration?
Posted 10 Sep 09 8:33 PM
For the first time we've grown broad beans, and throughout winter they have thrived. They are huge, covered in flowers, being attended daily by bees, yet after three months of flowers we have not produced a single bean pod. Any hints about what we're doing wrong?

Well, the way I feel about broad beans, you are doing it exactly right. Flowers, bees and no pods sounds ideal to me. :-) It does seem a bit early in the season to be worrying. I found this though http://aussieorganicgardening.com/?p=448

Thanks very much - this does help, and I just noticed today a few tiny pods forming, so all good. Now we'll see how they taste... :-) cheers

Hi There, I had the same issue, it seemed to take ages until the pods appeared, but once they came so did the snails@! They just LOVE broad beans, so much so that they climb up the stems and eat the leaves, pods and all. So remember to address any potential snail problems and you'll be soon enjoying a bumper crop of beans! PS I read that you can pick them small and use them like green beans in a stir fry, so thats another option for you. I tried them and they were nice!
Cheers K
