I've cut back my tomato plants and it has NOT died. I have even transplated the plants and they didn't die. I like to believe when you cut back the excess, the plant can concentrate on producing quality fruits.

Sounds like you NEED to cut back your tomatos to get the fruit ripening! snip off lower leaves, and leaves shading the fruit, also cut out laterals which are the little branches that start in the join of other branches, chop off the top - even if it means sacrificing a few flowers up there. Keep up a regular programme of liquid feed weekly and keep watered and glasshouse well ventilated to prevent disease. Let us all know how you go. PS wear gloves cause the leaves stain your hands yellow!

We have just acquired a tunnel house and growing tomatoes for the second season. Last year was awful, but this year they have taken off, and as stated below, I cut all the lower leaves off up to near the top. The only problem this year even tho the fruit is quite large, is they are not ripening. I am in the north Otago area. Anyone else having problems there with ripening? Have been taking orange fruit off to ripen inside.
