I am trying to grow coriander but not having much luck.
The plant I purchased has died and all my seeds have come up like hairs on a dogs back - they got long and scraggly and just dropped over and died as well!

Stick with the seeded approach, it sounds like you sowed them too close - did you use a tray?
If so ditch the tray, prep the area you want it to grow and sow direct to the ground, don't bury the seed to deeply just scratch it in and it will come up okay.
Despite it getting cooler now, it should germinate and you'll get a reasonable crop as it won't bolt to seed.

You don't say where you are? Coriander does not like hot weather for starters. It also sounds like you sowed the seeds too thickly. The problem with coriander is that they go to seed quickly. There is a slow bolt variety.

The fact that they are getting long and scraggly sounds like they did not get enough sun, and dropping over is a typical damping off symptom which can be the result of over-watering.
