Solo mum wants to grow a garden
Posted 5 Jun 10 8:19 PM
Hi Im Janine. I am a solo due to leaving my abusive x. I have a daughter. We want to start growing a vegetable garden and a flower garden. 1 I have no idea where to start 2 I cant really afford to. So I was wondering if anyone had any seeds they would like to give away to us to help get us start so we can enjoy gardening as much as you. Does anyone have any tips for us on gardening?

Hi Janine, I empathize with you! I would start digging a patch of lawn over - turn the top layer of grassy turf under to rot down over winter. Collect vege scraps in a covered bucket at the back door(anything organic except meat), - every time you have enough, dig a 30cm+ depth hole and bury it. Cover your new vege patch with grass clippings, raked up leaves etc(steal some from the neighbors if you have to etc) Let this brew over winter then dig over the top layer to break up clumps (pretend its your ex!)and pull out weeds (get all the roots too). You should add some Gardeners Lime if you can afford it, then plant your veges in this. cheaper to grow from seed (slower but more rewarding). Make fertilizer with seaweed in a bucket of water, soak (covered) 2wks then use 1 cup of liquid from this in a watering can weekly on your veges (pongy tho!) plant spuds sept, leafy veg and brassicas early spring onwards. Luv to know how you go - get the kids helping or a corner for there own to try.
