help identifying a plant from palmers garden centre
Posted 5 Jan 12 11:56 AM
hi, if there is anyone out there able to help me identify the plant in the uploaded picture, it would be very much appreciated!
I bought the pot 2nd hand, and a rather sorry-half-dead-looking version of this plant came with it as the people had not looked after it. after repotting/loosening up the soil she came right and the foliage started to flourish (this is the 2nd/3rd month).
I was told it was purchased from palmers and the salesperson had told the original owner that the plant bears some sort of small melon-esque-looking fruit ?which is possibly edible but doesn't agree with all palates/tastes?.
The leaves are velvety/hairy in texture, with purple veins (come to think of it, the undersides tend toward purple, especially when young), the biggest/mature of them somewhat longer than an average female hand and as wide as one with fingers spread out... i threw out one of the roots because it had completely dried up and ?died?, but the regenerated foliage appears to be 2-3 plants out of that one repotted root i separated from the dead one. it hasn't borne flowers/fruit yet however i'm hoping to identify the plant before then in order to place it in the garden/create conditions/feeding program...
Even a guide as to the family or a semi-educated guess, etc... would be a great start!
Many thanks to anyone who can help and have a happy new year!

Looks a bit like Gynura to me or by the description of the fruit maybe a Naranjilla?
