New Seed Saving Initiative
Posted 6 Jan 12 11:50 PM
Hi Everyone, here is a new seed saving initiative we have developed, to protect the rare and beautiful heirloom fruit and vegetable varieties in New Zealand.

Our aim is to get the new generation of gardeners, as well as the older generation, to save any seeds of any heirloom crop, and then save and exchange it at will. That way, the varieties will become more widespread, and more people will be introduced to these rather obscure varieties.

We aim in the future, to start a Seed Bank, comprising of heirloom seed sent from around the country, and also of standard non GMO and non F1 hybrid seed, so we can then keep a database, and also provide new gardeners, especially those on low incomes, or benefits, with the foundations for self sustainability. We will also offer a free mentor service to new gardeners who need help to begin a new garden. Being a non-profit organisation, we will NOT be selling things, and we will not allow seed or plants to be sold on our pages without our prior permission, depending on circumstances. We wish to keep it a money free affair. Our currency is seeds, seedlings etc, and peoples kindness.

To join the cause and register an interest in saving seed, please follow either or both links, and join the forum and/or our facebook page.

Correction: We will not be selling things for the purposes of profit, only for essential needs, ie, fundraising for materials to build up our seed bank etc.

I was actually looking to start something within the neighborhood which is to assign different people to grow different stuff that would very well be consumed by everyone in the group. Though I have pondered that this could be a source of some feud with who gets to choose the better crops and those which are not all that needed. But in any case, there should be an agreement to share equally to everyone, right?

You are exactly right. What another page does on Facebook, is anyone who wants to can just throw any excess produce on the page for free to whoever wants it. I prefer to split it, say i have a harvest of 30 corn ears, i restrict it to 5 per household. Others do that too.

If you wanted, you could become a manager in SSNZ, for this sort of thing in your community. I will be looking for people to do exactly this sort of thing in their communities, and with a seedbank that is beginning to build up, we can establish a direct supply of free seeds from the seedbank, to communities.
