We've just harvested our garlic and although there was a lot of vegetative growth most of the bulbs are very small. This was the first time we've tried growing garlic. The variety is Printanor. Does anyone else have experience with garlic? Any tips or ideas on what to expect?

I think you might have harvested them a bit too early.

Most garden advice says to plant garlic on the shortest day and harvest on the longest day. This advice carries over from years gone by when most gardening books were from England, and in England this advice is true.

Under New Zealand conditions, a FAR bigger crop is produced by planting in April. The bulbs will put on a bit of size before the winter, and then the cold weather will give them their characteristic flavour. In early spring they will continue to grow and put on more bulk in the bulbs.

The other factor with garlic is that they are gross feeders, and will reward you for you efforts when you feen them.
