I have two mandarin trees that were planted mid 2010,they have some branches with large spiky thorns and some without. It apears that the fruit is only growing on the branches without thorns. Should I prune the branches with thorns off? The trees have approx 1/2 of their branches with thorns and 1/2 without.

We sell citrus at work, and they all develop spines. It is a trait of the citrus species all the varieties are bred with i think, they just get spines.

Hi Kath,

Many citrus are grafted. Make sure the spiney branches aren't coming from below the graft-line. The rootstocks tend to be far more spiney than the scion wood, and if left to grow will outgrow the fruiting wood. If the thorns are above the graft line - then all is well.

That is correct, i was chatting to a guy at work who informed me of this. Take off all the suckers before they produce the nasty spines
