 Help to ID a plant. Posted 12 May 12 9:54 PM
Hi, I am new to this forum and new to gardening, but quickly getting my green thumb :).
I would like some help to ID a shrub I recently became the owner of. Normally good ol' google comes through be not this time so I need the help of plant experts!
I have attached a pic but its not very detailed. For reference the plant in the pic is approx 50cms tall.
The flowers are bright pink with a 6 'pronged' bright yellow stamen. They hang in clusters. They looked similar to a fuchsia but i'm pretty sure its not related. The leaves are small with pink feathered edges.
Any help to figure out what this is would be appreciated?

Hi , looks like a Fushsia to me. It seems to be gfrowing well in the pot but if you have space it will be even better if planted in the ground. It will lose all it's leaves and flower over winter. Just before grwoth recommences is the time to prude it back and give it a tidy up.

I have quite a few Fuchsias in my garden and have posted one for you to see.

Sorry, but you are way off the mark. This is Begonia foliosa var miniata. Also called the Fuschia begonia, on account of its pendulous flowers. Not even distantly related to Fuschias in the slightest.
Shrubby perennial plant with slender stems and oblong-ovate to sickle-shaped, toothed, shiny, mid-green leaves, 1" across. Produces fuchsia-like, pink to red flowers, to 1 1/4" across most of the year. Grows to about 30" tall x 18" wide. This is probably a hybrid or a selection of Begonia fuchsioides as the species actually has bright red flowers. Plant in bright shade and water regularly.

dinkydi was not way off the mark. She simply didn't quite identify the plant. Life is full of learning. Go easy on the arrogance orchidmaniac.

Watch yourself stranger. She was way off the mark, it isnt even related to the begonia family. But i understand people can get it wrong, even if they do have a BHortSc(Hons) and a BHort degree. I have had a few things wrong in the past, but always learned from my mistakes.
Easy to see why she got it wrong though, the flowers do vaugely resemble fuschias.
