Hi there, I'm wondering if it's right or wrong time of year to plant citrus (meyer lemon) and strawberries. I've been given them as gifts. I live in Wellington (Stokes Valley). Thanks.

Winter I understand is pretty good for planting cuttings and young plants. Just be sure the soil isn't wet and sticky when you plant them out. My lemon meyer is now out in the garden in the sunniest sheltered spot in my garden and I live on the Western hill in Lower Hutt, which can get frosty. I have also put my strawberry patch in the ground and made sure they're all mulched up. Reuse those clear plastic containers you get from the supermarket bakery or salad/fruit pre-packs to cover and protect them from the worst of frosts. Seems to work!

My experience is that the sooner the plants get into the soil the better, you still have plenty of time before winter for the plants to get established before the chill sets in, just remember to keep the water up to them particularly in the first few weeks while they are trying to make contact with the new ground

Mmmmmmm Strawberries.
